The first thing you need to do is decide you want to market on the internet.

Fortunately that decision has already been made for you. You CANT afford NOT TO!

Whether you are selling e-books or have a car repair shop you need to be online.

Good, now that you agree that online marketing is not just a weird thing that geeks do and is as important as the sign on your business and your listing in the yellow pages then lets proceed.

The most important thing you can do is to get targeted traffic.

Look I am going to try not to use computer/internet jargon as much as possible but sometimes I can’t help it and I will make sure to explain each concept in very simple everyday terms.

Targeted traffic. Getting folks who are most likely to buy your product or service.

You wouldn’t advertise under nail salon if you were a carpenter even though you use nails right.

Targeted traffic is all about understanding your potential customers and clients methods they use to find your service or product.

Because, and I am a “Field of dreams” fan, “If you buld it they will come” does not work on the internet.

First you need to understand who you are building it for.

If you are building it for yourself and jut want to havea website. That is ok as along as you understand that.

So before you decide what you want to sell think about the folks you want to hang out with.

If you are into golf you want to hang out with golfers. If you are into fine dining then you probably like talking to foodies.

If all you want to do is have people come to your site/blog or whatever and don’t care about them you will make yourself unhappy. Because to be successful you will need to talk to your prospects and customers so

You might as well enjoy it because over 95% they won’t buy anything that day.

Over the years I have created a large list of customers and potential customers. But more importantly I have made a lot of friends so I enjoy what I do.

Recipe for Success:

Take 1 hourĀ  and think about what you want to do for the next 5 years.

Take 1 hour and write down who you want hang out with for the next 5 years. Write down as many details as you can.

What do they eat? Where do they live? What do they do? How do they learn about what they do? How much do they spend on thier favorite past-time? What problems do they deal with. How can you make them more successful at thier favorite past-time?

Repeat on the first of each month.

I hope this has given you a step in the right direction. I wish someone had told me this when I first began.

By the way. you can use this for a Off line business too.
